FAQs

Fertility questions, answered simply

Straight answers to the questions couples ask Dr. Prachi most often. General information only; your own plan depends on your history and tests.

Getting started

When should we see a fertility specialist?

If you are under 35 and have been trying for 12 months, or 35 or older and trying for six months, it is time for an assessment. Come sooner if you have irregular periods, PCOS, endometriosis, past pelvic surgery or a known male factor.

What happens at the first consultation?

Dr. Prachi takes a detailed history from both partners, may do an ultrasound scan, and gives you a short list of tests. You leave knowing what each test is for and when to do it.

What should we bring to the first visit?

Any previous reports, scans, prescriptions and treatment records for both partners. A list of your period dates for the last few months is also helpful.

Do both partners need tests?

Yes. Male factors are involved in close to half of all cases. A semen analysis is quick and is part of the first set of tests.

Treatments

Is IVF the only treatment for infertility?

No. Many couples conceive with lifestyle changes, ovulation induction or IUI. IVF is suggested when tests show it gives the best chance, for example with blocked tubes, low egg reserve or a severe male factor.

What is the difference between IUI and IVF?

In IUI, washed sperm is placed in the uterus around ovulation and fertilisation happens inside the body. In IVF, eggs are collected and fertilised in the laboratory, and an embryo is placed back in the uterus.

What is ICSI and do we need it?

ICSI is a lab technique within IVF where a single sperm is injected into each egg. It is mainly used for male factor infertility or after poor fertilisation in a previous cycle.

Can women with PCOS get pregnant?

Yes. Most women with PCOS conceive with lifestyle changes and ovulation medicines such as letrozole, sometimes combined with IUI. IVF is needed in a smaller group.

What is the best age to freeze eggs?

Ideally before 35. Egg quality depends on the age at freezing, so earlier freezing gives a better chance per egg.

Tests and health

What does an AMH test tell me?

AMH gives an estimate of how many eggs remain in your ovaries. It does not measure egg quality and cannot predict natural pregnancy on its own.

Which tests should I do before planning a pregnancy?

Common checks include a thalassemia carrier screen for both partners, rubella immunity, thyroid function, a blood count and sugar test. Folic acid should be started before conception.

Can lifestyle really affect fertility?

Yes. Smoking, alcohol, excess caffeine, poor sleep, high stress and very high or very low weight can affect egg and sperm health. Healthy habits support every treatment, though they cannot promise a pregnancy.
